There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the border from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling den betting is not allowed. Eight gambling halls are based in a generally tiny area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect destination, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular betting locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing capital gained from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a couple of controls requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; however, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 17:00, and although visas are supposedly needed to pass, there are ways around this, as is true of most borders.

The original Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only 1 gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored barge gambling den, contains 150 slot machines and 60 table games. The Naga casino never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of 21, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machines and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and 66 of the normal table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-around vacation and hotel building that highlights numerous amenities accompanying the gambling hall, which offers ten thousand square feet of 130 one armed bandits and 88 gaming tables.
